I've been fighting getting sick all week-- and it's become a losing battle, but I had no idea I'd done so little in such a long time!

I did, however, find time to make Father's Day cards-- better late than never-- and I'll hopefully get those posted soon!

If you're looking for something to do though for dad, which is always such a struggle for me... I took my idea from the always-wonderful Martha Stewart.

I sat down on Memorial Day, and I finally made it.

I've been planning to and dreaming about recreating this L.L. Bean Signature Collection skirt since I saw it in their summer catalog a few weeks ago.

In between the family visit, burgers and homemade ice cream, I slowly pieced together and hemmed the fabric. And in a second wind around 10 p.m., I put in the zipper and pieced together the tie belt from the pieces left.

I used a linen blend-- hence the wrinkles; I didn't bother ironing-- instead of chambray. I also nixed the belt loops and made the waist band and belt wider

I used the "Bias Skirt" pattern from One-Yard Wonders, which I could not love more, with same waistband technique that I used last time. However, to be fair, this project did take almost an entire yard and a quarter, as well as a zipper that the pattern did not include.

I wore the skirt to work and then to a party yesterday, and I loved it. It held up beautifully, and I felt proud to have made this!

More than a week has been by since my last post! I knew I would be posting more infrequently this summer, but this is a little embarrassing. I hope you all will bear with me through the summer, until I can get back on a better schedule.

{East Nashville Arts Fest}

I found out a little too late for entry to this, but I'm super excited for the East Nashville Arts Fest this weekend!!

This is the first fest, and I'm praying it continues as an annual event. I'm definitely hoping I can get my act together and sign up for next year. The entry fee is a little high, but it could be worth it. I'll have to see how this year's turn out is.

I've been more than busy with work, but hopefully I can keep crafting and keep posting! I wanted to share this, so that any readers in the Nashville area could go out and support the local crafting scene!

{rosette pin tutorial--as promised!}

Buried in a drawer-- that's where I found the battery charger. In fact, the same, exact drawer in which I keep my camera!! Don't I feel just DUMB.

So finally, here is the tutorial-- a bit too late for Mother's Day, but perhaps it can go to good use another special occasion?

So, what you need for this project is:

a few rosettes in your-- or their-- favorite colors, you can use this tutorial
needle and thread
an extra strip of felt
a pin back
beads-- or buttons or anything else you like-- for the centers

1. Sew the rosettes to the extra piece of felt. To sew without the thread showing, just insert the threads in between the ruffles. It's also cute to let them show, especially if you use a contrasting color or one that matches your beads/buttons.

I like to overlap and curve mine, but they're also adorable to stack, and be sure to play around before you sew!

2. Cut the backing felt so that it doesn't show from the front. There's no need to finish the edges, but if you're especially hard on your jewelry, you might want to invest in a little fray check.

3. Use the same method used to attach the rosettes to add the beads (or just sew on the button).

4. Attach the pin back to the backing felt, and voila! Easy peasy. I went through each of the holes several times to make it super secure and then tied the ends behind the pin back. It's easy to miss the felt, so make sure you're getting the felt in your stitches each time. I would also suggest gluing down the thread tails to avoid them sticking out.

This is one easy project with beautiful end results. I spend about an hour total on each, so one TV program, and I'm done! I hope all of you will enjoy these as much as I have!

Well... it's more just like a card and a present rolled into one! But I think all my mothers and grandmothers are going to love one.

I suppose the postage would be a bit more on this than a regular card-- I'm handing them out to my family-- but aren't our mothers worth it?

I designed the card fronts specifically for this purpose, to put a pin next to it. Then I made another version for sending without the pin.

Hopefully, my mother's will wear the pins with pride-- and sorry for ruining your surprise-- or at least enjoy looking at the lovely cards!

** I'm putting the card fronts below. I hoping they are large enough and of good enough quality for you guys to use. I recommend printing them two to a page that is printed landscape.

Finished!! I've been tinkering with idea in my brain for literally months, and I finally got around to doing it. Not that it was hard to do (I'm sure you'll figure out what I've done in nanoseconds), I just needed the time.

I guess you could say I'm pretty into pieces that are multifunctional, and this one fits that rule. It's both a brooch and a necklace!

The chain is detachable, so that it can be worn as a brooch. And of course, I'm able to switch out different brooches so that I can switch up the colors.

I'm already thinking of other applications for this chain. Maybe some ribbon or fabric?

P.S. Also, I was trying to model the necklace, but in every picture I ended up looking giraffe-y; so I've done the best I could with the most normal, non-giraffe-y photo.

I don't know how I've fallen so behind, but it has happened. My apart was ashambles until my cleaning frenzy yesterday-- that cut it close to our visitors walking in the door.

I've finally gotten a lot of my work projects finished, but my crafting has fallen by the wayside-- as have my plans for the shop. The two new summer tops that I have also been planning haven't even been touched, so there goes entering into Spring Top Week, which closed Friday.

I'm hoping that things will go less crazily in the coming weeks, although I'm starting a new adventure of sorts. Plan on seeing new things soon-- hopefully!!

P.S. The print at the top is an old piece of mine that I recently rediscovered. (I hate calling my arts "pieces," but I don't know what else to say.) I'm really liking it to go into my crafting room, whenever that gets put into action!

Yesterday was disappointing for many reasons. Something that I had thought was a "sure thing," didn't come through, and it threw me back into stress that I had thought I was finally breaking free of.

Of course, my natural coping method was to window shop, of sorts. So, I looked around to all my favorite bloggers-- and other places-- for inspiration.

Okay... Not the most flattering picture, but the skirt is so comfy! I made this easy, jersey skirt in under an hour the other day.

I had just gotten One Yard Wonders after failing to make a jersey skirt without a pattern. I suddenly wished I had had the book just a day earlier, because it would have saved a lot of math and seam ripping.

The skirt pattern and instructions are really simple and straight-forward. I also used a trick that I learned from my mother to make the waistband, without a seam showing!

It goes a little like this:

Cut two waistband pieces the same length as the width of your skirt and double the measurement you want the waistband to be finished.
Fold the waistband piece in half lengthwise with right sides together. Tuck one of the pieces of your skirt in between the edges of the waistband. Line the edges of the waistband with the top edge of the skirt. Pin.
Sew.
Pull the skirt piece out of the little roll, and this will automatically turn the waistband right side out-- like magic!
Do the same to the other piece, then sew both sides of the skirt together!

*If that didn't make much sense to you, this tutorial might be helpful!

I'm already planning two improvements to this skirt: maybe a little embroidery at the bottom and next time I might not do jersey.

I'm also thinking this might be a cut way to make a dress and salvage an old t-shirt or tank. Just cut off the bottom of the shirt and stitch the skirt to the shirt. Cute?

Cherry Blossom Fake-Out

While I love all the beautiful spring blossoms, my nose feels entirely different. So, I appreciate any little way to bring spring inside that doesn't involve a lot of pollen!

There were also a lot of fallen branches in the front yard from all the snow, which were extremely unsightly, but I hadn't gotten around to cleaning them out. So, as I cleaned them up, I had a flash of inspiration!!

This project, which I modified from the current issue of Martha Stewart Living, is simple and almost methodical. The hardest part, especially for me, was cutting out all of the flowers.

I found that if I folded the paper four times, then cut, and then folded each of the petals individually that I got much crisper, cleaner looking flowers. Like this!

1. Cut two to three-inch squares from cardstock-- you can also use vellum, but I didn't have any on hand. Fold the square in half...

2. And fold in half again. Make sure to crease it well, because this will make the flowers look much better.

3. With the folded corner pointing down, cut out the petal. For this one, I used almost a heart shape to make the cherry blossom petals.

4. After unfolding your flower, simply pinch the petals in the center to create a wonderful 3-D effect. I also used a felt pen and dotted the center to give a bit more detail.

5. To attach the petals to the branches, poke through the flowers with a large needle-- or something else sharp. Then dot some craft glue-- it needs to be on the thick side-- and slide the flower down to the glue-- not too far!! Let the branches dry standing up overnight, and you're done and ready to decorate!

The weather has been so lackluster here that I haven't been able to get any really good photos of my latest project. Hopefully, tomorrow I can get home early and get the good light!

These hair pins and ring are just a few of the new pieces I have made. I'm really loving the colors, aqua and coral, and I just wish my new haircut was cute enough for those pins.

I used EcoGlue this time because I was tired of getting headaches from the awful stench of the glue. So, I tried this one out. It worked really well, despite all the problems I had in the beginning.

This glue is water-based, so it is much thinner than the other glue. The cabochons kept sliding off of the bases on the pins.

In the end I just kind of propped them up with other objects. I'm not sure I can use it to glue earrings to posts though because it is so thin.

However, I really appreciated not suffocating or feeling like I automatically had cancer while I was gluing my pieces together!

I've been working on a little decoration for my theoretical craft room. I took a little inspiration from the New York Public Library's digital gallery, which I absolutely LOVE, as well as my favorite spring colors.

I also included a few of my favorite quotes-- two from Jane Austen because I'm on a bit of a kick after re-reading Emma.

I've designed the four prints shown above to hang in a square above my bookcase. I'm thinking black frames, but I'm not sure. What do you think?

Right now, I'm slightly obsessed with She & Him, Volume Two. It's the perfect soundtrack to go with the beautiful weather even though, surprisingly, it's full of heartbreak.

I also love the beautiful cover art! I've been waiting to buy the album, but luckily, it's free on npr's "First Listen" for a little bit longer! Which is lucky, because I love to listen while I work!

Lunch bag No. 2

I went to the fabric store, and... I've made another lunch bag.

When I went back to the fabric store, they had a few new things in... and I fell in love with one that went perfectly with the red lining I had left over.

I was kind of miffed that they hadn't had it the time before, but I forgave them because this one flew by-- now that I know what I'm doing.

A couple things I wish I had done:

sewn the hook enclosure on BEFORE sewing together the enclosure flap and
checked to make sure the enclosure was REALLY straight before I started sewing. It's not that it looks terrible, but I know it's crooked, so it is bugging me.

Note: the beautiful orchid that Mr. Cupcake gave me for Valentine's!

{busy, busy}

I've been running all day! But it feels good to have accomplished so much. I finally got around to taking pictures of a few projects-- thank you weather, so expect some new posts soon.

And I made Easter eggs! I tried to use the techniques from the most recent Martha Stewart Living, but it didn't work out quite right... Oh well.

I also made an apple pie-- well... am making. It's in the oven right now, and I'm not sure how it's going to turn out. I kinda ran out of crust, and I didn't feel confident enough to try to expand it on my own. I guess I'll have to wait and see. All that matters is how it tastes!!

The cards pictured at the top were also part of this morning's endeavors. These Easter-- well, more like spring-- cards are just a few hand-cut pieces glued to a Liberty of London card from Target.

I hand drew the flowers, trying to match them to flowers on the cards. Then I cut around the drawings with a craft knife.

I could have saved myself some time and just used a printed drawing, glued to the back and then cut around.

I'm working on a few cards now with bird's nests and eggs. They are pretty cute!

In one good afternoon, I can do a lot more than in several nights. I had been working on this one in pieces-- cut it out one night, sew a bit another night, iron and topstitch another-- but the other afternoon I had a bit of time off, and I just sat down and did it!

In all actuality, I probably hadn't done much more than on any of the other occasions, but finishing a project just makes me feel as though I've DONE something. And it's a good feeling.

This project was easy-peasy, once I understood the directions. I had been putting it off for a long time, but after a week of grocery bag lunches, I knew I need something more stylish.

This tutorial-- which I got from the Sewing:2010 Day-to-Day Calendar-- came from the wonderful Melissa Esplin at ISLY.

I had a little trouble following some of the tutorial's directions, but everything is simple enough to figure out. One thing I would do, is sew on the hook side of the hook-and-loop closure before sewing together the enclosure pieces.I also used oil cloth for the lining instead of regular cotton; it keeps things clean and was pretty easy to sew!

Also... I'm still not sure how to do the sew together and turn inside out part. I just folded the edges down and then topstitched!

I'm really loving the design though. And the wristlet is great for keeping free hands!

Kahlua Chocolate Mocha Cupcakes

That's a mouthful isn't it? But a very delicious one.

The cupcakes are really simple, just a basic chocolate cake recipe-- or a box, if you were in a bind like myself-- with a few tweaks. Instead of water, I substituted some room temperature coffee. I also added a splash, or two or three, of Kahlua!

The icing is a recipe from the Cake Mix Doctor. She calls for six Tablespoons of boiling water, but I also substituted coffee-- this time hot-- here too.

The icing was a bit too melty, perhaps from the gorgeous weather--finally!! I couldn't pipe it very well, but I think it looks just fine. I might go back and add a few chocolate twirls or sprinkles, just for fun!

Today is a friend's birthday, and these are for her party tomorrow! Also, notice the lovely Liberty of London for Target serving tray!!

I had been waiting for weeks for these to come out, and I am so glad I got this piece! I'm almost surprised at how quickly these have sold out, but seeing how cute they are explains it all.

I just can't help myself...

Design*Sponge

I HAD to share this lovely post from Design*Sponge.

I'm so enthralled with this idea. The purpose is to display your "stock" so you know what you have and don't have to hunt around, or buy extras. But I think it's just a lovely way to liven up a craft room.

And I'm a total fabric hoadrer. I picked it up from my grandmother, who had boxes upon boxes of fabric stored away. I just don't want to throw away-- or use up!!!-- anything so gorgeous as my materials!

Perhaps with these I can just keep a small piece of each, display it, and use the rest. Do you think it's possible?

found myself with a bit of free time today-- during which I probably should have been doing the dishes-- but I got more accomplished in those few hours than I feel like I have in the past few days.

I now have a super cute lunch bag, and I am halfway finished with a friend's birthday present!

So... I was blogging yesterday, and the site had a spaz on me, and then... CRASH!! All of yesterday's post went missing in one fell swoop.

After a small fit of rage, I decided to quit, but here I am again to recreate what was lost.

Recovering from a lazy weekend-- and the time change-- is making me a little bleh. So, I've been flipping through my google reader in hope of finding a few things to perk me up. Nearly 700 items!! I didn't know I had been MIA for so long. The weather is again crap, but I found a few nifty things to brighten my-- and your-- day.

Pictured above is a project I'd love to do from Design*Sponge. And I'm loving this three-tiered serving tray video tutorial from Decorityourself.

The wonderful LollyChops is also hosting a craft-a-long week next week and has posted the materials for everyone to get started collecting. I'm super curious to see what she'll be doing!

{thrifted, found and made}

This is going to be a pretty big post to make up for my recent absence. Hopefully, I can get back into a routine soon, but don't fear: the crafting never stops.

I went thrifting today, which was fun for me. I'm using my purchases to display a few new things that I've made. The cake stand is something that I've had for a while, but I bought the bottle this morning and found the mini stand plate in my grandmother's attic.

The rosettes-- oh, how many I've made!-- are a newer, better, I think, version of my older ones. I think the beading is a lot more delicate than the vintage buttons, and, of course, I love the coral.

I wore one to my mother's birthday party this weekend, and I got a lot of compliments-- and it perfectly matched my sweater!

I'm thinking of pulling a page from doe-c-doe's blog and using pin backs to make it into a necklace-- and also a pin! I love things that can work two ways. It's so convenient.

P.S. exciting!!-- let me know what you think of the card designs! I've gotten an Etsy shop, but just haven't set it up. I'm thinking that will be my logo-- and name.

'm not sure what it is, but I've been feeling slow. It could be the weather, which seems as if it will never pick up, or it could just be stress, but hopefully my upcoming break will be enough to put me back in a crafty, or even just better, mood.

But all I can think right now is that "If I were a crayon, I would be gray." I really want to be coral though. I got two cute coral tops for spring, and I'm wearing one now with one of my most current necklaces. I thought it would cheer me up a bit, but it's not quite doing the trick.

Anyone got anything cheery to share? Please post!!

Valentine's cookies!

I didn't get around to making my Valentine's cookies until Valentine's Day. I'm a bit disappointed in myself, but I had fun, and that's what counts!

I tried a new recipe, which is always hit-and-miss. They weren't as buttery as I would have liked, and they really needed to be refrigerated for several hours before rolling. But then again, they were supposed to be drop cookies.

I don't think I'll use this recipe again, but it was worth the experience.

My icing also didn't turn out perfectly; it was extra runny, and it ended up Pepto-pink, instead of a light pink like I wanted. I made the best of it though, and drizzled or dipped most of the cookies, as to avoid neon shock.

If anyone has any delicious tips for me, please let me know!

I think making valentines is one of my favorite parts of Valentine's Day. I've made my own cards for a few years now, and I love them more each year.

This year, I took a little inspiration from avie designs. I also got a little stamp-happy with my new stamp set, thank you Mr. Cupcake!

I had all my stuff spread out Friday and Saturday, paper scattered every where, and glue on everything. I used bits and pieces I had let over from the Christmas tree decorations. It was fun and childish, and it just makes me happy. And giving a homemade valentine makes others happy too.

I'm mailing a few out this year, and I'm going to hate putting them in the mail, but I'm hoping those hearts will pop back to life when the card comes out of the envelope!

I really wish I had one of those power tools--wouldn't that be dangerous though! It would have been very helpful when I repurposed my great-grandmother's pin into a necklace.

Organization

It eludes me, but I love it none the less... I think I like the idea of organization more than the practice, but don't we all.

I especially love the idea of buying all the organizing accessories, like this. But alas, I will probably never have that much money.

I am getting started on a small crafting space in my apartment though! Yipee!! All I have right now is a bookcase, but I'll progress eventually.

I'm actually pretty proud of this bookcase. It's not the best-- just a cheapie from Target-- but I put it together, with the help of Mr. Cupcake, and I got to use a power drill. I only stripped two screws, and I didn't hit my thumb with the hammer once!

I have all my crating books together on the shelf, cupcake liners in one jar and cookie cutters in another--although it is a little small for all of them. And I'm using the cloth bins to store my fabric, scraps in one, and fat quarters and half-yards in another.

Now there is the problem of what to do with the rest of my stuff because that wasn't even half of it. Right now, a fair amount of my fabric is in a cardboard box. I also have various boxes of paper and felt and other what-nots, and I'm not sure what to put them in.

Please let me know of any good organizing tips, and I'll be sure to share with you as well!

The snow has helped me out! I finally finished the project I have been working on... a sketchpad strap.

Instead of carrying a large portfolio for my sketchbooks, I decided to make this carrier, which is much less cumbersome, especially for someone a short as I am! I made up the pattern to be specified to my notebooks, but I'm working on a tutorial that can be adjusted to any size.

I'm really liking the way this looks, especially the retro-ish fabric, which, by the way, was a trip to sew. I'm thinking that I might add buttons over the velcro just for a little extra pop!

Snow Day!!

We are officially frozen inside. I think the snow has finally stopped, but the snow on the ground has turned to ice! We took a walk around the block, and I'm still trying to warm up my face.

Right now, I have a couple projects in the works, and hopefully being stuck inside will help me finish them! But until then, here's to hoping you are all staying warm!

Creative Everyday?

Tomorrow is my first check in for the Creative Everyday Challenge. Every Monday, we are supposed to post a link or just write a comment about our creativity that week.

I suppose I'm a little afraid of falling behind, coming up short, not being as creative as everyone else. I know that creativity isn't something to be measured, but I feel that my accomplishments this week are so very few.

This week, I haven't made anything, or done anything, really spectacular. I dreamed an idea for my valentines this year, but it's plain and simple, not special. I cleaned out the extra room, and started organizing my crafting things (check back for more on that one-- Eeek!).

I've also started learning Illustrator through a class I'm taking right now, which I suppose makes me feel a little more creative-- at least I am learning something new! And I am getting the hang of the pen tool-- click, click, drag, and click-- which is pretty exciting for me!

I guess, looking at it like this, my week has been more productive than I had imagined! But perhaps a more concrete challenge is what I need for next week? I guess we'll just have to wait and see!

Christmas presents!

Yes, I am finally getting around to looking through the books I got for Christmas. Or, more like, I just got around to taking pictures of them!

I'm yearning to sit down and start on these projects; so perhaps sometime this week I'll be able to share.

But for right now, I'm still hard at work making jewelry. I finally got the posts to glue to the earrings. Success!!

Rosette Tutorial

Here's the rosette tutorial as promised! It's a pretty simple thing, but I thought I'd go ahead and explain it anyway. Bear with me, please. This is probably going to be a long one, but I hope you can put it to use!

1 Begin with a long piece of felt. I used about 1 inch by 6 inches. Remember that the width of the piece will be doubled in the end, so this should make a 2 inch rosette. You can of course go larger and smaller, and this will allow for stacking!

2 Stitch along one long side using a basic running stitch. You don't need to tie off the ends, but leave about two inches of tail at the start. You'll need it later! Small stitches will result in a more ruffled rosette, while long stitches will produce a less pronounced ruffle.

3 Pull the end of the thread while holding the start tail until the ends of the felt meet and over lap. The ends may not ruffle as well, but don't worry!

4 Using the long end tail, sew the two short sides together, again with a running stitch. I went to the top and back down, just to make it more secure. Try to avoid sewing through the short tail, so that you can use it to make a tighter ruffle later.

5 To finish, pull both tails tight until the center is closed or nearly closed. Tie off with a knot, clip the ends, and you're done!

Variations: You can also use the technique with frayed or pinked fabric-- like this, or double the fabric over and sew the edges together to form the basting stitch. Remember to use a longer length with fabric, as it is not as thick as felt.

The Creative Eveyday Challenge

I just signed up for the Creative Everyday Challenge, and I have to admit that I am both excited and a little anxious. I know, however, that participating in this will help me strive to be more creative.

And hopefully, the creativity will some easier after a while. I've always noticed that creativity is this way. The more you practice, the easier it comes! Wish me luck! You should be seeing some of the spoils-- for lack of a better word-- of my creativity up here, so check back soon!

Infrequently, I can be very productive. This lazy, long weekend has actually turned out to be very productive. I didn't realize how much I had done until I finished.

I thrifted and refurbished this vintage plastic frame, turning it into a jewelry cork board.

I also gave this cutie a bath, and now he is fresh and lovely. Too bad it's raining, and he won't stay that way.

And while I was watching a rerun of the World's Strongest Man Contest-- wicked!!-- I started on this. It's sad that I can't finished it, as I have no sand! However, I should still be able to post pictures and a tutorial for this pin cushion/trash bag soon! Until then, stay productive!! It really does feel good...

Rosette Rage

I've been in a rosette frenzy of late. I've done this before, but never in this quantity. I just kept making them.

It was really to have something to do with my hands. I cut strips of different colors, lengths and widths, and then I gathered, and gathered, and tied. And I really had no idea what to do with them at first.

But then, it just appeared, in a burst of inspiration. I don't know why, but the more I do, creatively, the easier it comes. I think it's that way for a lot of people, and this is why I am striving to never go a day without doing something creative, stretching my creative muscle, I guess.

And like stretching real muscles, I am hoping that my creativity will expand, become more flexible.

And the burst of creativity said to me last night, why not make a necklace out of these... So I am going to try!

P.S.I'll try to post a tutorial for this soon. I tried finding a similar one online, but no luck. Stay tuned!

Tea inspired napkins

A friend of mine is a great tea aficionado, which she's been striving to turn me into for years. Her love of tea, along with this download from A Print a Day, inspired her Christmas gift, a set of embroidered napkins to go along with her tea.

I drew my cups instead of using the template, so that I could personalize them. I tried to make each one unique and specific to a time period.

I started by drawing the designs onto the napkins. I measured to make sure they were in approximately the same spot--I'm bad at guessing distances. I drew mine in with pencil, but that probably wasn't the best idea on my part. A washable fabric pen probably would have smudged less.

After I embroidered each cup, I washed the napkins, ironed them, and folded them into the gift box.

I'm guessing that she liked them, because the day after I gave them to her, they were already on her dining room table! I wish I could have found such perfect and thoughtfully handmade gifts for everyone, but perhaps if I start early this year, I can make the next year a handmade Christmas!

Cleaning Day Challenge

I've been cleaning for a week. Well... at least it feels like I have.

I took down the Christmas tree and decorations and packed them up for next year. It's now so sad and bare around the house. I need to find or make some winter decorations, so wish me luck!

I cleaned all the floors in the house yesterday, and I thought my arms were going to fall off. If they didn't look so shiny and beautiful, I would be mad that I had spent hours doing it.

I'm still working on finding places for all the things that we accrued over Christmas. I should go with the theory "out with the old..." but I am a pack rat by nature, sadly. I did work on organizing my growingly messy recipe collection in an adorable little book! This system is much better than the stick-all-my-recipes-in-other-books system that I had before.

I still have some sewing to do, taking up sleeves and taking in shirts, but I have finished one minor project, adding velcro to our pug's new jacket! Which he hates. Everytime we put it on him, he gives us the saddest face imaginable. But too bad for him, it's going to be under 32 all week.

The snow, although beautiful, is keeping me inside; so hopefully, I can finish more this weekend! Here's to getting things done!!

The title applies to both the year and the few Christmas presents that I have left to wrap.

I love the cute gift wrap that you can buy at Target, but it really doesn't hold up well. But it's too late for this year's bunch. Next year, I'm just going to buy some heavy duty kraft paper, or use brown paper bags, and accent with the cute paper and bows. If only I remember during my Christmas frenzy in 2010!

Sadly, this should be my last post before the holidays, and I just might be able to squeeze one in before New Year's, but I can't make any promises.

Ten and Counting...

With only ten days until Christmas-- Yay!!-- I thought I'd go ahead a share these before time runs out! I made these Christmas stockings a while back, but it's been so busy lately, that I hadn't gotten a chance to take photos.

The story is... I absolutely fell in love with a stocking set and tree skirt at Pier1, and since it was pretty simple materials, just felt, I thought, "why couldn't I make that?" So, I did!!

1 I drew up my pattern for the stocking and appliques-- I had to simplify a lot from what I had originally planned, but I think it looks better that way.

2 I cut out the pieces from felt and fleece, and the stocking are actually made from fleece, and glued them to the surface to keep them in place as I stitched the edges.

3 I stitched around the edge of the stocking, making sure to leave a half an inch edge. Then I scalloped the edges, just with my scissors, for a cute finishing touch!

4 The cuffs were just two rectangles the width of the top edge. I stitched the trim on first, then stitched them together, and stitched them on to the top, where I added a loop of ribbon at the side seam opposite the toe.

Sadly, the accompanying tree skirt that I had planned to make will not be joining us this Christmas. All that hand-stitching takes time.

I had also planned to put up a template of the design with this post, but it's not here. It'll be up sometime though!!

Sleepy Sunday Christmas Craft

I'm really excited about these adorable trees! I worked on them today and a bit yesterday, and I am loving the way they look. I might move them from the mantle to the table... but really, they look good anywhere.

I started with three Styrofoam trees, two smalls and a large, and several different scrapbook papers in greens, browns, blues, and a red. I tried to pick smaller prints so that they would be visible when I cut them.

For the large tree, I followed this tutorial from Thompson Family Life, but used paper instead of felt. The larger tree is the one toward the back, but I'm rather shorter than the mantle, so the scale is just a bit off.

1The smaller trees are made from leaves cut from the paper. The first row is one strip of paper, to cover the bottom edge of the foam.

2Pin the leaves onto the styrofoam with flat head straight pins. Each row should overlap the preceding row in order to hide the pins. I let my colors alternate rows, but it would also be cute in diagonals or randomly placed.

3For the snowy top of the tree, I cut a cresent shape-- like the tops used on the tree from Thompson Family Life-- then scalloped the edges. I glued the sides into the cone shape, then pinned it atop the tree!!

This project was so easy, and the results are so cute! Another addition could be a bell or bow to the top, or maybe use decorative head pins as ornaments for your tree. No matter how you do it though, this craft is definitely one to get you in the Christmas spirit!

kay. I can't lie. It's a fact. So... I have to say that there probably won't be a lot of projects posted this month from me.

I can't believe that Christmas is almost around the corner, and I'm just starting to craft my Christmas gifts. And, of course, I can't just put them online for all the recipients to see!

There is one shareable project in the works, but I'm having a time trying to finish it! So, for now, there might not be too many projects, but not to worry! The crafting never stops!!

Retro Patterns???

I have just died and gone to heaven again. I didn't notice when pattern makers began republishing old patterns, but I have to thank them.

I went into my local crafting store to look for the pattern for a pencil skirt, and I found way more than I wanted to, as is my habit! But how could I resist retro patterns?? Plus, this pattern worked much better for my purpose than did any of the others that I saw; although, I think I am going to modify it by adding some kangaroo pockets in the front...

I think the sizing is a bit different in older patterns. Has anyone noticed this? I am having to make a size 12, where I am usually an 8...

Alas, I have so many projects and so little time, that I'm not sure when I will get this fabulous skirt done...

Ambition

This is my problem. I get too ambitious with my projects, and this leads to half-finished and literally half baked ideas.

My ambition this time led me to buy a monstrosity of a pumpkin to carve into a haunted house, like Martha... But alas, I am neither Martha Stewart nor any of the people who work to carve pumpkins for her.

I started by hand drawing my design on my pumpkin, and it looked pretty good. I was psyched. Then, I started cutting into the ginormpkin, and that is when the problems started. That sucker is thick.

By the time I got too tired to carve, all I had done was a few small bits, mainly some windows and the tiles on the roof. I may never finish this thing, but at least I tried, right?

Next year, if I blog about some harebrained pumpkin scheme, someone please refer me to this... But until then, here are a few things that I probably should have been doing first.

It's FINALLY here!! The first of the Penguin Classics clothbound series come out in the US tomorrow--at least according to Amazon. These books are beautiful and classic and WOW!!

I first saw these books on Design*Sponge. Some still aren't available in the US, but my favorite book, Pride &Prejudice--cliche, I know-- is available! I can't wait to get these tomorrow!!

h my! Tonight was Halloween Cookie Night, and I must say it was a smashing, yet messy, success!

These cookies look like something that arose out of the ashes of Chernobyl, but I think they have a certain kind of 8-eyed charm. I'm not super happy with my cookie recipe, so I'm on the lookout for a new one, if anyone has any suggestions.

I really didn't get around to much of anything this week, but hopefully I'll make up for it this weekend! And I'm definitely getting in the Halloween mood! I already have a beautiful pumpkin, and I'm thinking about what to carve on it!

Bake it Pretty is literally the ONLY baking supplier a girl could possibly ever need. Sure, the grocery store is great for quick supplies, but baking with intention to cuteness is much better.

Bake it Pretty offers a wide selection of cupcake liners to suit everyone, and I, of course, just bought three. It also helps ease my conscience that these liners aren't much more expensive than the ones at the grocery store, but they offer SO much more personality.However, these liners go quick, so you have to be on your toes to catch them in stock!!

Covered cork board jewelry frame

I did it! Okay... I half did it. I actually had two picture frames that I wanted to finish, but the second has staple problems. The first had its problems too, but I overcame, and the finished product is pretty nice!!

I started out with a slide-in picture frame that's back was completely grimey. But take a picture frame and patch your pieces of cork board to fit the frame. So, I replaced the back of the frame, with just a cardboard folder and glued the cork down to that.

Next, simply cut your fabric a couple of inches around the board. --I chose a jersey knit so that it would stretch around the board.-- Peel up the cardboard from the back of the cork and stretched the fabric around. Tuck it in between the cork and the cardboard, then press the cardboard firmly back in place.

After it's glued, let it dry!! I probably didn't let mine dry long enough, but it's working pretty well.

The last step? Just slip it into your picture frame and voila!! A beautiful and functional jewelry frame. Just pin your jewelry on the frame, and let it decorate your space as a multi-functional piece of art!

This weekend I'm hoping to finish some boards on which to display my jewelry. Hopefully, they'll be as beautiful as this one from Craftynest.

I've already found a few unused picture frames from my grandmother's attic, and I have fabric and paint in mind. So it's coming along swimmingly, and I'm hoping this weekend will be a nice one to do some painting!

A boy and his Star Wars plushie

So, despite how deceptively simple I though an R2D2 plushie-- for a certain special birthday boy-- would be, I couldn't abandon true Star Wars geekiness for ease and less stress.

My mission: to make one very correct plushie for a very discerning seven-year-old.

I think it turned out pretty well in the end. I left in as much detail as possible, although I did abandon the legs--or arms--or whatever. But I don't think he cared too terribly much.

I loved seeing him open his R2D2 pillow, and although it was a lot of work, it was a lot of fun too. It was a challenge to freehand this robot without a pattern, and I think it worked out pretty well.

Finally moved in!!

I am finally moved in, mostly!! And to commemorate my great achievement, I made some house-warming-- oven-warming-- cupcakes! And they turned out beautifully!! Nicely mounded and cracked on the top, and perfectly golden brown, but still moist. I might be a little bit too proud of them...

Honestly though, I cannot consider myself entirely moved in. I don't have a cake tester-- or a single toothpick-- in the entire apartment. So, the perfectness of my cupcakes relied entirely on chance. But that still doesn't burst my bubble!

So, I found a lull in between all my running around that happened to coincide with a bit of good light in my living room. In honor of such a momentous occasion, I took a picture of the few pieces that I have managed to get done while watching Top Chef-- to which I am addicted.
(side note: Hooray for the Georgia boys!!!)

Also, please, please let me know what you think, because these are going to be the foundation for what will hopefully be my line sold in a small boutique called Sugaree's in Murfreesboro, Tenn.!

Although I have not yet begun to explore my new city, I am relatively settled into my new apartment. And as I settled into the task of catching up on my reading yesterday, I found more than 700 posts in my reader.

Moving Week

I have finally moved to a brand new city. And while I am still getting into the swing of things, my blogging is going to be in the range of infrequent to nonexistent. Hopefully I can adjust quickly enough to work out a few new ideas for this site. But until then, I'll keep crafting, and I hope you do the same!

Headband mania

We all know how I love a creative and beautiful headband. So as I opened up my google reader--bursting with nearly 500 messages-- I found two wonderful headband projects. These gems are enough to make me not regret the two days I spent decluttering my reader.

The first are several ribbon-wrapped headband techniques from May Arts. I've never tried this, but those flowers are to die for!

And from Heart of Light comes the lovely rosebud headband. I really can't wait to try this one!!

Simply Sublime Bags

Another library find, Simply Sublime Bags has piqued my interest. The bags are "low-sew, no-sew projects," which is very intriguing to me, considering I sewed my first purse at the tender age of seven.

Although I don't really know how I would handle stapling and duct-taping a project together-- I am very old school-- the bags are beautiful. And they seem really simple to make, provided that I could get over stapling my seams instead of sewing them...

The land of many

I realize how lax I've been in blogging this recently, but it seems to be a month of chaos and big projects. Not always necessarily large, but simply time-consuming.

Not only am I preparing to move, but I've taken on refinishing a table--my first, and I'm pretty excited!! I'm also recovering cushions for a friend, and a very important 7-year-old needed a Star Wars related birthday present...

So, I ask forgiveness for my neglect, but I can promise that I will be back online soon! Hopefully next time I will have another project under my belt to share!

Has it really been six DAYS since my last crafting extravaganza? I feel really lazy. I could have an excuse-- I have an ongoing cold that I cannot seem to shake-- but I know that it is still just laziness. Hopefully, I can make some time in this busy week to finish a project or two. An origami success!

I saw these beautiful folded (and glued) paper flowers on Curiositys and decided to make my own. The directions come from t does wool, which does a wonderful job of explaining to a paper-folding-failure like myself. I made a few of these for a neighbor and, of course, a few for myself!

Two turtle doves... aren't they cute?? I found this adorable vintage pendant on Etsy, and I knew I had to buy it. The colors are so vibrant and lovely that I could not resist.

And with the contrasting aqua beads and the antique raw brass chain, the necklace is delicate, beautiful and eco-friendly. It's one of my favorite new pieces to wear, and I have a few of these pendants to spare, so perhaps more turtle doves are in my future...

Mission upcycle

I love the idea of taking something old, like a t-shirt, and refashioning it into something new. I have been attempting this miracle for many years, and until recently, I never knew that it had its own word, upcycling. I must just be behind the times, because Etsy house tons of stores dedicated to upcycled clothing.

However, buyers be wary. The quality of some of the upcycled pieces leaves much desired. So, my mission now, try to upcycle something in my closet--because I know there are a ton of things that I love, but won't wear again. I hope some of you will join me in my mission, but if you cannot be persuaded, check out these fine Etsy retailers for the best of upcycling:

Little Swiss Girl

I made this doll as a belated birthday present for a very sweet little girl in my neighborhood. I put a lot of work into it, and although it isn't perfect, I'm proud of this first attempt. The pattern came from Stitched in Time, the book from the lovely writer of Posie Gets Cozy.

I, of course, made things a bit harder for myself and altered the pattern from the directions. Instead of gathering the ends of the arms and legs with a whip stitch, I sewed them closed on the machine, to make them more sturdy for a small girl. The effect is not as smooth-- the feet and hands are a bit square-- so perhaps I should have rounded the ends as I sewed.

The pattern also called for the skirt to be gathered and sewn to the doll, with the ribbon added simply as decoration. I made the skirt interchangeable by making a casing for the drawstring and bringing the ribbon through two buttonholes in the front.

I also felt that the pattern directions were not as clear when it came to adding the hair, but I did my best. In retrospect, I should have almost overstuffed the head, or added the hair before I had sewn on the legs, so I could have added more filling.

However, the expression on the little girl's face when she saw her doll was enough to erase any fears about its appearance.

Preoccupied with P&P and zombies

Gladly, my lack of blogging is not due to illness or death, but to a very interesting book. I can't decide if this book is genius, or sacrilegious (for a true Jane Austen girl, such as myself). But I do believe I like it none the less. Scenes from Pride and Prejudice are interjected with world-class zombie fighting by the Bennett girls, quite entertaining and definitely funny.

Guatemalan Gold

Okay... well, technically silver, but I love to alliterate.

My family just got back from Guatemala, and unfortunately, I did not get to go. However, I did get back some great goodies in the form of jewelry and a few other things. I love the shade of this lavender jade ring, which has not been well-captured in the picture.

Also, joy of joys, my thoughtful sister brought me back an ever-handy chicken oven mitt and fabric!! I haven't come up with a plan for the gorgeous fabric, but I'm sure I'll find something...

Perhaps a pillow, or a car-visor-sunglass-holder for my ever-growing collection of sunnies?

I looked out the window a few minutes ago and saw this beautiful sunset. It took my breath away because of the unexpected beauty. It is not something I consider every day, but it is always that is there, waiting to be seen at just the right moment, when the colors blend and merge and contrast their perfect hues.

Birthday Quilt

This quilt, from my mother on my 20th birthday, has been in the works for years. This quilt is called "Turning Twenty," and uses twenty fat quarters. It's easy to cut out and piece together, and it is finally done-- almost... I have always loved these reproduction vintage fabrics, and this quilt, although a bit crazy-colorful, is pure happiness for me. The colors and prints just lift me up, and although they don't necessarily match, I think that it's the spirit that counts.

Cherry blossom hair clip

I was inspired by the movie Mulan to make this gorgeous-- I think-- hair clip. I love the simple, beautiful look of cherry blossoms, and I think what made this clip was the, dare I say it, delicacy of the felt and the wonderful colors.

Felt is not normally a delicate material, at least not the felt you find at the craft stores, especially with consideration to the colors. However, these beautiful felt colors are courtesy of pixiexrose on Etsy.

I did have a few problems, but in the end, I think it turned out beautifully. I'm obviously not the best at embroidery, and although I've tried many times, I cannot make a French knot stay, well, knotted. In the end, I just made a knot close to the fabric. Not as fancy, but just as cute!!

Sunday Afternoon Laptop Sleeve

A Sunday afternoon all to myself, and what to do? Make a laptop sleeve of course!! This excellent pattern came in the form of a free PDF download from Sew, Mama, Sew! The pattern is customizable to any laptop, which is really helpful as I have an older MacBook.

I think my case turned out beautifully, and I made in the span of one Sunday afternoon. I do love the accomplishment of a project that can be finished in one setting, made and enjoyed in one day!

I did have a few problems in making this case, but in the end, it was my own fault. I bought a double-sided fusible quilting batting, instead of the fusible fleece called for in the pattern. I thought this would eliminate a few steps, but in the end, it took longer because it would NOT stick.

I also added some double fold bias tape to the front flap to break up the small argyle pattern. This just added an extra step and a lot of careful sewing to the project. I had done bias tape before on a skirt, and it turned out really great.

However, sewing is not like riding a bike. I hadn't sewn for a while before this project, and while I thought I would still be able to sew just as well, I was mistaken. I ended up sewing the bias tape on at least twice.

The end project, however, is beautiful and fits my laptop like a glove, unlike the one I bought before! So, thank you, Sew, Mama, Sew! for the free PDF pattern!

Birthday Bash

I don't know what to say, except... it's been a long weekend. And part of the week... I had two cheesecakes, a cake shaped like a cupcake-- courtesy of the bf-- and a cookie cake. But now, hopefully, I am getting back into the routine of things and will be able to think again. I have several finished projects to post, but little time in which to post them. Hopefully, I can have something posted by Friday at the latest!

First attempt: Ruffled headband

Hello dear readers! I know I have been absent for a while, and it is not that I haven't been crafting. I have a few things under my belt to show you, but the weather has been so temperamental as to make taking pictures quite a chore.

However, the weather and my schedule have finally coordinated as to allow me to take pictures! So here was my first craft for the week: a ruffled headband.

I found the tutorial for this cute headband on the wonderful Heart of Light. I decided to alter it a bit and not have the ruffles cover so much of my head, as my hair is rather flat and not as cute as the hair in the tutorial, and I thought it would look strange.

I also used a wider ribbon that I had lying around-- another bad idea for my hair. I love the color of the ribbon, but the width did not work with my head.

Instead of simply letting the ribbon tie around my head, I added a piece of elastic to make a stretchable headband. To do this, I just folded the edges of the ribbon around into a cone shape--after applying some fray check-- and inserted the end of the elastic into the whole, then sewed the elastic into the ribbon.

I like the idea of tapering down toward the elastic, as it would decrease the amount of width behind the ears-- which can cause funny hair poufs in the back.

I do think the finished project turned out beautiful, but not beautiful for me. The wider ribbon would probably work better for a person with more volume in their hair.

Next time, I will definitely follow the directions--instead of going for convenience-- and use a smaller ribbon! I do definitely recommend this project, and you can check it out at Heart of Light.

Button Love

I always feel like I am talking about "'stache" like "mustache" when I use the word "stash." But, for today, I am talking about just a collection of like items, namely, vintage buttons.

I honestly love buttons. So many projects can be made special with just the right button. And I love my button collection, and yes, I do admit that I have them color coordinated!

This vintage collection of buttons came from several places, mostly my grandmother's collection of old buttons, which I painstaking went though to find the most unique pieces.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Oatmeal Cookies

I bake when I am mad. Honestly, I have been mad and stressed a lot lately. But this is one easy, delicious recipe that puts me back into the right mood!

These chocolate, peanut butter cookies require no baking, and thus, are much quicker to make than normal cookies. Or perhaps they should be called a candy. Either way, they are delicious.

Ingredients

1 stick butter or margarine
1/2 cup milk
2 cups sugar
5 Tablespoons (or less) cocoa powder
1 cup peanut butter
3 cups (plus some) of quick cooking rolled oats

Directions

Melt butter in a large saucepan.
Add milk and sugar to the melted butter, and stir until the sugar has dissolved.
Mix in cocoa powder-to your liking.
Add the one cup of peanut butter, and stir the mixture until the peanut butter has combined.
Slowly combine the oats into the peanut-butter-chocolate-y goodness until all the oats are covered in chocolate. Then drop the mixture onto a sheet of wax paper by the tablespoon.

You can enjoy these treats hot and cold, although I can never hold out until they cool. These really are perfect for a bad day!

Projects, projects everywhere and no time to think

I have projects and more projects galore, but I can't seem to find time to do anything. Right now, I am wishing to have a few days off, and it is only the beginning of summer, and the weekend hours seem to fly. I'm reeling at the prospect of having to go back to work tomorrow. I feel like I've barely had a weekend at all, and it's already Sunday afternoon.

Hopefully, I can put my nose to the grindstone and finish all the projects that I've started. Honestly though, the fact that I am the procrastinator doesn't help much.

But as a little sneak peak for you, just so you know that I haven't forgotten you, I'll post some pictures of a few projects in the making!
